Nepenthes Alata
Nepenthes alata is a spectacular tropical carnivorous plant, known for its long leaves ending in hanging, trap-like pitchers. These pitchers, often speckled red or green, attract and digest insects, making it a natural ally against small creatures. It adds an exotic and intriguing touch to any bright, humid space.
-
Light : Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, blazing sunlight, but give it plenty of light to encourage pitcher formation.
-
Watering : Keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Use rainwater or demineralized water, as it is sensitive to limescale.
-
Humidity : Likes high humidity (60% and above). A terrarium or water tray under the pot can help maintain good humidity.
-
Temperature : Ideal temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts.
-
Substrate : A light, airy mix, often made from sphagnum moss, perlite, and bark. Do not use standard potting soil.
-
Fertilizer : Avoid traditional fertilizers. It feeds on captured insects. You can occasionally offer it a small live insect if grown indoors.
-
Repotting : Approximately every 2 years, in spring. Handle with care to avoid damaging the urns.
-
Special feature : Pitchers can dry out if the plant lacks light or moisture. It is normal for some pitchers to die over time while new ones form.
Available in 6" planter.
