Guide to Potting Soils for Houseplants: Choosing the Right Substrate
With my 20 years of experience in indoor plant care, I have learned that a good potting soil makes all the difference for your plants. Each plant has its own specific needs in terms of soil, aeration and humidity. Here is a practical guide to choosing the best substrate according to the type of plant: Araceae, cacti and succulents, as well as other tropical plants.
1. Araceae (Monstera, Philodendron, Alocasia etc.)
These tropical plants love humid and well-ventilated environments.
Recommended soil:
- A potting soil for indoor plants enriched with perlite to improve drainage.
- Add pine bark , coconut fiber or horticultural charcoal to recreate their rich and airy natural habitat.
Advice :
- The soil should remain slightly moist, without being soggy.
- Use sphagnum moss to maintain humidity while ensuring good air circulation.
2. Cacti and Succulents
These plants like dry, well-drained soils to avoid excess moisture.
Recommended soil:
- A special potting soil for cacti and succulents , composed of coarse sand, perlite and pumice stone.
- If you can't find any, mix standard potting soil with plenty of sand or perlite for quick drainage.
Advice :
- Add small pebbles or gravel on top for even more drainage.

3. Other Tropical Plants (Calathea, Maranta, Ficus etc.)
These plants require rich, well-aerated soil that retains moisture without excess.
Recommended soil:
- Use a regular indoor plant potting soil , enriched with compost for a nutrient boost.
- Add perlite , coco fiber or a little sand to improve aeration.
Advice :
- Make sure the potting soil dries out slightly between waterings to avoid waterlogging.

4. Orchids
Orchids like Phalaenopsis need a very airy substrate that allows their roots to breathe.
Recommended soil:
- A special orchid mix based on pine bark and charcoal for optimal drainage.
Advice :
- Never use traditional potting soil, which would suffocate their roots.
5. Carnivorous Plants
Carnivorous plants grow in nutrient-poor soils and require a specific substrate.
Recommended soil:
- Mix peat and non-calcareous sand or perlite to recreate their natural habitat.
Advice :
- Water with rainwater or demineralized water, as they are sensitive to minerals.
Conclusion
Choosing the right soil for each type of plant will ensure their well-being and growth. Each plant has its own specific needs, and with a little attention, you will see magnificent results!
